She got her stage name when music producer Rob Fusari compared her vocal style to Freddie Mercury and took the name Gaga from the Queen song "Radio Ga Ga".
Her early life
She was born in March 1986, in New York, to an Italian family. She attended Convent of the Sacred HeartSchool and, as a little girl, she remembers singing into a plastic tape recorder to the likes of Cyndi Lauperand Michael Jackson. By age 4, Lady Gaga had taught herself to play the piano by ear, and when she was a teenager she penned her first song. When she was just 14, her mom took her to play at open mic nights at New York’s Bitter End, and by the age of 17 she had been one of 20 kids in the world to get early admission to Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. This is where she developed her writing skills by composing essays about arts, religion and social political order. She did however withdraw from university and never graduated. She then moved out of the house, and started hanging out in the Lower East Side doing drugs, and appearing in burlesque shows at dive bars with drag queens and go go dancers. Lady Gaga admits that her father couldn't even look at her and she says 'he just didn't understand'.

Pussycat Dolls. Akon recognized Gaga's vocal talent, and signed her to his label Kon Live Distribution. She started to work on her debut album after that. Her first two singles of that album, "Just Dance" and "Poker Face", co-written and co-produced with RedOne, have become international number-one hits, and the former was nominated for Best Dance Recording at the 51st Grammy Awards. In early 2009, after having opened for New Kids on the Block and the Pussycat Dolls, she embarked on her first headlining tour, The Fame Ball Tour.
